The collective bargaining agreement is the legal document that brings a measure of justice, equity, and democracy to the employment relationship and the workplace. Our contract is only as effective as its enforcement. The grievance procedure in a collective bargaining agreement and the effective use of it by the union and its membership transform the contract from a piece of paper into a living document. Accepting responsibility for representing fellow employees before management can at first seem an overwhelming task. However, it is a position that can be mastered and exercised effectively if the person who accepts it uses basic intelligence, pays careful attention to detail, and maintains a firm and reasonable attitude. The best representation that workers will receive will be provided by stewards who have a well-thumbed copy of the contract and a strong sense of justice and fair-play.
