With union battles fresh, GOP moves slowly on proposed ‘right to work’

With the memories of union battles in Wisconsin, Ohio and other states still fresh, the GOP majorities in the Minnesota Legislature are moving slowly on whether or not they want to take on the fight with unions over proposed “right to work legislation, according to a Minneapolis Star Tribune article titled, GOP weighs cost of union battle.

House Speaker Kurt Zellers, R-Maple Grove, was quoted for the article saying "there's not a fever" among his caucus for the right-to-work proposal. The article stated that Republican committee chairs Tony Cornish of Good Thunder and Morrie Lanning of Moorhead have spoken against the idea.

‘Fighting the freeload’: another opinion piece opposes 'right to work' amendment

Right top work“Fighting the freeload” is the headline of an opinion piece posted on the Twin Cities Daily Planet. The editorial opposes the GOP-controlled Minnesota Legislature’s proposed “right to work” constitutional amendment.

“Work hard,” the Daily Planet editorial begins. “Benefit from hard work, time and investment, then give it all away to someone who doesn’t invest, work hard or put in the time.

“Welcome to the realities of the proposed ‘right to work’ constitutional amendment …”

Redistricting maps released

The highly anticipated redistricting maps were released Tuesday afternoon.

Team MAPE will be working to defeat a number of GOP legislators in 2012 who do not support state employees. The districts many Republican anti labor legislators will be running are now more DFL leaning then they were before.

The new districts will make reelection more difficult for incumbents such as Representative Doug Wardlow, Representative Diane Anderson and Senator Ted Lillie. Wardlow, Anderson and Lillie earned a 0 percent vote scores on MAPE issues during the 2011 session.

In the Minnesota Senate there are now eight open seats. There are two Senate districts where DFL incumbents are paired with each other and four districts where incumbent senators are paired up. There are two districts where a Democrat and a Republican incumbent senator have been matched up.

MAPE IT consolidation group receives update from chief CIO

Carolyn Parnell, state chief information officer (CIO), updated the MAPE IT Consolidation Advisory Committee where things are at, and the committee had a chance to ask questions and share concerns during a meeting with the advisory committee Feb. 15.

Parnell shared an overview from the Phase 1-4 documents, specifically focusing on Phase 3, which we are in at the present time. Phase 3 of this consolidation includes three major issues:

Committee:

Right to work: ‘wrong’ for Minnesota, a right to 'freeload'

“Wrong” for Minnesota and a “right to freeload,” is how media articles and posts are labeling the Minnesota Legislature's proposed “right to work” constitutional amendment.

Two opinion pieces in Sunday’s Star Tribune oppose “the wrongly-named “right to work” proposed constitutional amendment. The Star Tribune’s editorial (Editorial: 'right to work' is wrong for state) pointed out that “right to work” “is wrong for this state.”

Sen. Parry calls state employees ‘union thugs’

Sen. Parry visits with MAPE membersHow disrespectful can state Senator Mike Parry (R-Waseca) get?

(In the photo on the right, Sen. Parry meets with MAPE members at the state Capitol.)

Sen. Parry, quoted in Friday’s Rochester Post Bulletin, said this: "I didn't back down to the union thugs and bullies in St. Paul and when you send me to Washington I won't back down to that same bullying."

Really, Sen. Parry? State employees are union thugs?

Sen. Parry’s comments were made Thursday night at a Meet the Candidate event sponsored by the Rochester Tea Party Patriots. Sen. Parry is vying with Allen Quist for the GOP endorsement to challenge First District DFL Rep. Tim Walz.
