Because we are American professionals, being part of a union might seem strange at first thought. We are accustomed to hearing about unions as they relate to skilled labor. Why do we as professionals feel we are less deserving of representation that will ensure fair wages and benefits and safe working conditions? It is time to change our way of thinking and to decide that we are worth it.
As professionals it is the very definition of our job to exercise control over our income, terms and conditions of employment and quality of the standards of practice in our field. It is impossible for us to exercise substantial influence over any of these elements alone. We need to stand together to speak up for what we deserve. If we choose not to get involved as members, then we must be willing to accept lower wages and reduced benefits. Keep in mind that all state professional workers are eligible to be MAPE members including temporary workers, and unclassified and classified workers.
