September 2008
*  MINUTES:                Approved as submitted.
*  PRESIDENT:             Greg will be attending the Delegate Assembly accompanied by Glenn
Melchert, Lynn Lenz, and Jen Seliskar.  Resolutions were reviewed in
Preparation.  Greg also presented a report on membership recruitment and
Noted Lynn Lenz is the TOP recruiter for Local 1401.  Greg, Tom
Doughtery (BA), and David (Director) helped Local 1401 gain 6 new
Members during their travels Sept. 10 and 11.
*  VICE PRESIDENT:  Helen chaired the Grand Rapids meeting in September and
relayed members discussions of the Health Care Savings, MAPE’s building mortgage and other resolutions.  Local 1401 has 314 members, 121 fair share for a total of 435 people and 72% membership.
*  TREASURER:            With a balance of $8,848.00, we likely have enough funds for a
Turkey Trot.  $4,000 is undesignated reserves.  Lost time may come to $1,000 and mileage $500.  Turkey cost estimate seem reachable.
*  DIRECTOR:                          David Wright clarified community group contributions from MAPE and
clarified their value in networking for MAPE.
*  GRIEVANCES:          There is a DNR grievance moving into the 2nd step and still 2
grievances outstanding regarding the snow emergencies.
*  BUSINESS AGENT:   Tom Dougherty commented on several MAPE statewide topics
and answered member questions about the professional pollsters calling members regarding politics and contract issues.  Tom encouraged all members to make greater use of our website: www.mape.org.  There are even links to union made goods and health care resources for those without insurance.
*  NEGOTIATIONS:      A survey will be sent out to full members and fairshare.  Be
assured that all hand written comments are indeed read.
*  MOTION:                  A motion passed to replenish our contributions budget with $100 from the
undesignated reserve.  Local 1401 sent $100 to the Duluth Area Labor Day Picnic.
*  MEETINGS:                          Officers met with members in Ely, International Falls, Grand Rapids,
and Hibbing and brought information on “Member Benefit Overview” and “Insurance Negotiations History” and the SEGIP $250 Health Reimbursement Account.”  A call was made for volunteers for officer positions for 2009 or before.  Greg is currently President, Chief Steward, and Negotiations Representative; he needs volunteers.  Helen & Charlotte are ready to mentor in or turn over their offices to replacements.  Video teleconferencing is a possibility for meetings, especially with so many college campuses in our Local.
November 2008
*  OFFICERS:               President Greg, Vice President Helen, Treasurer Glenn, and
Secretary Charlotte met to determine whether a Turkey Trot was possible in 2008 – it is!  There WILL be a 2008 Turkey Trot on Dec. 11-12!  The majority of the deliveries should occur on between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11.  Any remaining turkeys will be delivered Friday, Dec. 12.  Volunteers, especially drivers, may contact Charlotte in advance or join us Thursday, Dec. 11, at 7:30 a.m. for breakfast at the Hometown Family Restaurant, Graysher Shopping Center, Hibbing, MN.  Routes will be planned according to the number of drivers.
