MAPE announces opening of applications for 2008 scholarships
MAPE Membership Committee
MAPE is pleased to announce the 2008 MAPE Scholarship Program. MAPE scholarships are for member career development and awards are made in amounts up to $1,000. The Thomas Kernan Scholarship can only be used for labor studies. The MAPE Membership committee, which is appointed by the MAPE Board of Directors, chooses scholarship recipients. Completed applications must be returned to the MAPE office by Thursday, July 31, 2008, to be considered. Scholarship winners will be announced by the first week in September. The MAPE Scholarship Program is a full-dues paying members-only benefit.

2008 SCHOLARSHIP RULES

APPLICATIONS:
(1) Applications for a MAPE scholarship can only be accepted on the forms provided by MAPE or at MAPE’s website (here's a direct link to the form in PDF format: MAPE Scholarship Application). If you are applying for the Thomas Kernan labor studies scholarship, please state that clearly.

(2) An application shall be considered complete when all the required information has been submitted.

(3) Only complete applications will be considered.

ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS:
(4) Individuals who are MAPE full dues paying members at the time of application.

(5) Statewide Officers, Trustees and Membership Committee members are excluded from consideration.

(6) Individuals who have not accepted a MAPE scholarship two times in the last four academic years.

(7)  Not have voluntarily crossed the picket line in six years, or three contract cycles.

NUMBER OF SCHOLARSHIPS:
(8) A minimum of four individual scholarships shall be awarded, for the MAPE scholarship. Thomas Kernan may vary.

(9) Of the scholarships awarded, at least one shall be from Greater Minnesota and at least one shall be metro, if at all possible.

CONDITIONS FOR AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS:
(10)  Scholarship recipients must provide verification of receipts of actual costs (may include tuition, course materials, travel and lodging expenses), and acceptance to a training facility, before scholarship money can be allocated.

(11) Candidates must also maintain MAPE membership during the course curriculum.

(12) Scholarship awards must be used by Aug. 3, 2009.

APPLICATION PERIOD: May 8 through July 31, 2008. All applications must be submitted to the MAPE office no later than Thursday, July 31, 2008.

The MAPE Membership Committee, in determining the winning candidates, will use the following rating criteria:

RATING CRITERIA

WRITTEN STATEMENT: A written statement including: (1) Your education and career goals; (2) Your financial or other need; (3) How the scholarship would be applied; (4) A paragraph describing what MAPE means to you.
