Women's Caucus

The 29th annual luncheon, “Share the torch: generations of women winning,” is 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at the Historic Milwaukee Depot, 300 Washington Avenue S., Minneapolis. Also attending will be Dee Dee Myers, former Bill Clinton White House Press Secretary, political analyst and commentator and author, Why Women Should Rule the World.

We would like to support the mission of the Women’s Caucus to promote participation in the labor movement through Support and Training.

Encourage members to educate themselves through sharing experiences with other Union Women Leaders and to help them gain confidence to move forward to a leadership role.

The Minnesota Union Women’s Leadership Retreat being held at Ruttger’s Bay Lake Lodge in Deerwood MN. Sponsored by University of Minnesota Labor education Service, to be held April 27-29, 2011 is a leadership opportunity that we promote and encourage MAPE women to attend.

Health and Wellness ExpoThe first ever MAPE Health and Wellness Expo “Year of the Woman” was held Thursday, Jan. 20, at the MAPE office. A blood drive was also held in conjunction with the expo that was open to all MAPE members.

Despite the bitter cold temperatures, there were about 60 women from a variety of locals who braved the elements to attend the event. (In the photo on the top right, MAPE members signed in for the first-ever Health and Wellness Expo at MAPE.)

MAPE women vendors from the metro area were in attendance to sell and show their talent at a variety of crafts. There were vendors who made jewelry, homemade lotions and soaps, greeting cards, baked goods, green cleaning products, and crafts for the home and family. Other vendors in attendance were: Union House Union Apparel, chair massage offered by Monterey Massage LLC, young women cancer awareness offered by young survival coalition, unemployment job search techniques offered by Carla Lentz, Health Source solutions offered blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, Employee Assistance Program, financial planning offered by Capital Street Financial, blood drive offered by the American Red Cross and bone marrow donation program offered by Be the Match Program.

Nineteen people gave to the blood drive and nine people who were signed up for the “Be a Match Bone Marrow Donation Program.” (In the photo on the right, MAPE members Kathy Davids, on the left, and Sarah Hustad, center and back, participated in a "double red cell" blood donation.)

This is just one event being provided for MAPE women to get connected and be engaged in union events.

There are more events being planned for the near future. Please keep watching the MAPE web site for how to sign up.

Outrageous = exceeding the bounds of
the expected, unconventional, violating accepted standards, boldly courageous.

You are already outrageous -- you are women leaders -- and we love you for it!  In this interactive workshop we will:
•    Explore how we are already outrageous
•    Gain ideas for increasing our confidence and those of others, and
•    Commit to taking action for continued positive change and outrageousness in our lives.

Come on, you know you deserve a standing ovation!

Facilitator: Peg Lonnquist, Women’s Center Director, University of Minnesota

Frances Perkins was Secretary of Labor for the 12 years of Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency and the first woman to hold a Cabinet post. She brought a deep commitment to improving the lives of workers to that office and helped create a legitimate role for labor unions in American society.  Perkins also chaired the Committee on Economic Security, which developed and drafted the legislation that became the Social Security Act in 1935.

To honor the passage of this historic legislation, you are invited to view a short film about Francis Perkins – “You May Call Her Madam Secretary” on:

Monday, Nov. 15
2-4 p.m.
Cowles Auditorium at Hubert Humphrey Center
West Bank Campus – University of Minnesota

The film is about conscience, politics, responses to the hazards of life and social justice. Comments, networking and refreshments will follow.

There is no cost for this event.
