With union battles fresh, GOP moves slowly on proposed ‘right to work’

With the memories of union battles in Wisconsin, Ohio and other states still fresh, the GOP majorities in the Minnesota Legislature are moving slowly on whether or not they want to take on the fight with unions over proposed “right to work legislation, according to a Minneapolis Star Tribune article titled, GOP weighs cost of union battle.

House Speaker Kurt Zellers, R-Maple Grove, was quoted for the article saying "there's not a fever" among his caucus for the right-to-work proposal. The article stated that Republican committee chairs Tony Cornish of Good Thunder and Morrie Lanning of Moorhead have spoken against the idea.

‘Fighting the freeload’: another opinion piece opposes 'right to work' amendment

Right top work“Fighting the freeload” is the headline of an opinion piece posted on the Twin Cities Daily Planet. The editorial opposes the GOP-controlled Minnesota Legislature’s proposed “right to work” constitutional amendment.

“Work hard,” the Daily Planet editorial begins. “Benefit from hard work, time and investment, then give it all away to someone who doesn’t invest, work hard or put in the time.

“Welcome to the realities of the proposed ‘right to work’ constitutional amendment …”

Capiak, Pennino receive Labor Notes scholarships

MAPE members Jim Pennino of Local 301 and Diane Capiak of Local 501 will each receive $250 scholarships to the Labor Notes Conference in May that is located in Chicago. The scholarship is a reimbursement after they attend the conference.

Labor Notes conferences are gatherings of grassroots union activists and worker center leaders. This year’s conference is May 4-6 in Chicago.

President: Meeting called to order at 12:00 pm.  Cathleen reported on elections in Minneapolis and cost of Costco Business card.  M/S/PP – (Pat Leary) to purchase business account for $150.  Cathleen will verify type of card and purpose then report back to local.  Business Agent and negotiation representative were absent.  Cathleen briefly discussed negotiations update.

Vice President: No report

Secretary: The members approved the minutes of the December 2011 meetings by general consent.

Treasurer:  Jess Anderson reported end of December balance of $583.14 before dues.  She also prepared a proposed budget for 2012.

President: Cathleen called the meeting to order at 12:02 pm.  Cathleen is happy to be back.  Discussion regarding purchasing a laptop dedicated to MAPE use.  Motion to ask MAPE for up to $500 to purchase said laptop – motion carried.  Local 2101 has a Costco card that can be used among members in the local for personal use, $50 annual fee paid by the local.  Treasurer will consider in the 2012 budget.

Place: Brainerd Central Lakes College.  With ITV hookup to Staples.
Time: 12pm

1-President Ron Rardin called the meeting to order and the minutes from the last meeting were approved.
a- Ron updated us on the SOS meetings he attends. There was a meeting on
Feb. 2nd the discussion involved the potential release of one of the inmates.  He would be the first release in 20 years of the Minnesota Sex Offender Program.
There was also discussion in regard to the smuggling of drugs into the CARE program in Fergus Falls.
b-Ron discussed the importance of being involved. There is a all Union bus going to the cities on March 27.  Call Liz Wheeler 838-4950 to reserve your seat or more information.

Journey for JusticeSupporters deliver petition signed by tens of thousands to Crystal Sugar headquarters

Fargo, ND -- Hundreds of union members, their families, and supporters rallied in Moorhead, MN, Wednesday to protest the lockout of some 1,300 workers by American Crystal Sugar Company (ACS). After the rally, a delegation of labor and community leaders delivered a petition signed by more than 33,000 people to the company’s headquarters, according to a news release.

MAPE Local met January 12, 2012 in conference room B144/145 at the Orville Freeman building. The meeting was called to order at 12:02 by President Larry Souther. A total of 100 members and fee payers signed in. Pizza lunch was served.

Secretary’s Report: Minutes from the December 2011 meeting were approved without objection

Treasurer’s Report: Bob Anderson reported an estimated local balance as of the end of December $17,200 and projected a local balance of $17,300 as of the end of January. Expenses paid in December included were meals & approx. $300.00 for a box of mugs.  

There was no report from the Chief Steward or Regional Director.

Membership Report: The membership committee reported current local membership at 65% with 310 members and 147 fee payers.

President’s report:
    -    The Regional Directors position will be open come mid December and will be open for nominations.  A posting for nominations will be sent out via email and will be open for 30 days.  Voting will only occur is more than 1 individual is nominated.  
Negotiations Team:
    -    Greg Williams was unable to attend but an update was available: The legislator has made it known that they will not ratify a contract but the negotiations team is still meeting in good faith.  They have not started talking money but continue to watch for updates on the MAPE website.
